African-American Political Leaders, Revised Edition summarizes the lives and political careers of more than 180 important African Americans who have been elected to federal, state, or local office; who have served as cabinet secretaries or in other cabinet-level posts; and who have run for president of the United States. An introduction provides an overview of the history of African-American political involvement from 1855, when the first black person was elected to office, to the present. This revised book situates the individuals covered in the work in a wider perspective, so that each individual's importance can be clearly gauged.
Organized alphabetically, entries present basic biographical data and focus on what the person did that was important while he or she held or ran for office. A general bibliography, two subject indexes (one by office held, one by year of birth), a general index, further reading lists, and approximately 50 black-and-white photographs complement the text.

Each alphabetically arranged entry provides a one- to two-page biography with cross-references, photo, and suggestions for further reading (many with Web sites). A bibliography and indexes by office, year of birth, and keyword follow the text. The entries profile 185 individuals from Ethel Allen (Pennsylvania secretary of state) to Coleman Young (mayor of Detroit) who have been elected to federal, state, or local office or have served in cabinet-level posts. Chronological coverage begins with John Langston (1829-97), the first African American elected to public office. However, Education Secretary Roderick Paige and the current Wilmington, Delaware, mayor--James Baker--are not included.
There is some overlap with other works, such as Distinguished African-American Political and Governmental Leaders (Oryx, 1999), and even with other volumes in the series. Buy where reports and interest make this title needed. RBB
