This is a thorough introduction to fundamental ideas in modern statistics for readers without a calculus background. The only book at this level to discuss modern concepts of hypothesis testing and estimation, it maintains an up-to-date outlook despite being published in 1970. Extensive problem sets and selected answers are provided.
J. L. Hodges, Jr. (19222000), formerly of the University of California at Berkeley, pioneered nonparametric density estimation. He also invented the Hodges bivariate sign test and, with Lehmann, the HodgesLehmann estimator.
E. L. Lehmann, a professor emeritus of the University of California at Berkeley, is a member of both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Science.
