Book by Chisholm, Roderick M.

Chisholm is a "philosopher's philosopher": he does not write for the lay person. The 18 essays collected here--two of which have been completely rewritten and only one of which (a very short piece on "categories") is new--cover such traditional metaphysical topics as freedom and determinism, identity, the mind-body problem, and the existence of the self and the external world. The provenance of the essays ranges over the past 30 years, although most are fairly recent. The writing has a medieval ring to it; the density of the arguments is such that only professional philosophers will have the interest to penetrate it. However, as all but three of the essays have appeared elsewhere, this is not an essential purchase, even for philosophy collections.
