About the Author

Gerald Vizenor, the author of Woodarrows and other books, has gained recognition for his thoughtful portrayal of modern American Indian life. He has taught Native American literature and film at the University of Minnesota and the University of California, Berkeley.

From Publishers Weekly

While Vizenor's ( Griever ) long-out-of-print peculiar fantasy generally draws more from Indian mythology than from realism, some of its material (such as a reference to Bernadette Devlin) has become dated since its original publication in 1978 as Darkness in Saint Louis: Bearheart . The backdrop is an America that has exhausted its oil supply and descended into chaos. Driven from their Minnesota home when the cedar trees Proude guarded are commandeered for fuel, Proude Cedarfair and his wife, Rosina, set out for New Mexico. On the way they gain assorted companions, including Benito Saint Plumero, who killed a man for love of a female park statue; Pio Wissakodewinini, who was punished for rape by being surgically changed into a woman; and Pure Gumption, a dog with healing powers. They meet dangers, such as the evil gambler, who wagers gasoline against any gamester's life; food fascists who carve up "witches" for restaurant fare; and a horde of people who, in the chemically poisoned environment, have been born crippled. Bestiality and necrophilia also appear in Vizenor's mythical tale, which may have been daring when first published, but now is puerile. Vizenor also wrote Crossbloods (see review above).

Gerald Vizenor (born 1934) is a Native American writer and an enrolled member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe, White Earth Reservation. Vizenor has published collections of haiku, poems, plays, short stories, translations of traditional tribal tales, screenplays, and many novels. He is considered a foremost representative of the literary movement known as the Native American Renaissance, a flourishing of literature and art beginning in the mid-20th century. His first novel, Darkness in Saint Louis Bearheart (1978) , later revised as Bearheart: The Heirship Chronicles , brought him immediate attention. One of the few science fiction novels written by a Native American, it portrayed a procession of tribal pilgrims through a surreal, dystopian landscape of an America suffering an environmental apocalypse brought on by white greed for oil. Simultaneously postmodern and deeply traditional, Vizenor drew on poststructuralist theory and Anishinaabe trickster stories to portray a world in the grip of what he called "terminal creeds" belief systems incapable of change. In one of the most noted and controversial passages, the character Belladonna Darwin Winter-Catcher proclaims that Natives are better and purer than whites. She murdered by ingesting poisoned cookies, purportedly for her promoting racial separatism. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; xiv, 254 pages Second Edition [1990]. A Limited Edition was published in 1978; 3rdPrinting (2001). Seller Inventory # 57882
