Synopsis
An inner journey across space and time linking the "author" to other poets, this lyrical essay-poem continues Helene Cixous's rewriting of notions of boundary, self, other, and author. Cixous here interrogates the status of the author, connecting distant instances of herself with other writers who traverse genders, generations, and national boundaries.
First Days of the Year is a celebration of beginnings and future possibilities, based on necessity and hope, constantly mediating writing and living, life and death. Like all of Cixous's profoundly original works, it seductively leads the reader into a new way of thinking by disrupting fixed ideas of psychic identity, subjectivity, and language.

Arguably one of France's most noted and controversial feminist thinkers and writers, Cixous remains uncomfortable with the "feminist" label. This series of meditations on authorship?written in the style of poetic fiction with no defined linear plot and published in French in 1986 as Jours de l'An?challenges readers' thinking by deconstructing traditional perceptions of identity, subjectivity, and language. Cixous explores a different relation to language by re-creating and redefining the notions of author, self, and others and by reflecting on the concepts of identity, death, and writing. She also exposes the writing process?the hesitations, doubts, and tensions within the author.
