Synopsis

Seven Novelists in the American Naturalist Tradition was first published in 1974.The focus of this eighth volume in the Minnesota Library on American Writers is on the naturalist tradition in American literature. Like other volumes in the Library, it is based on a collection of pamphlets in the series of University of Minnesota Pamphlets on American Writers. Professor Walcutt writes a thoughtful introduction which provides insights into the history of the naturalist tradition and its fruition in the United States. The essays included and their authors are: “Stephen Crane” by Jean Cazemajou, “Frank Norris” by W.M. Frohock, “Theodore Dreiser” by W.M. Frohock, “Jack London” by Charles Child Walcutt, “Sherwood Anderson” by Brom Weber, “John Steinbeck” by James Gray, and “James T. Farrell” by Edgar M. Branch. In his introduction Professor Walcutt writes: “The ‘naturalism’ of the main writers who have commonly been subsumed under the label not only differs markedly from one writer to the next but also never accounts for what is the special quality and hallmark of any of them . . . Yet all these writers have a new concept of physical-social-political-moral process; all protest in one way or another against convention and hypocrisy; all are seeking new forms for dealing with a world that has forever departed from the certain certainties of orthodox tradition. They carry us into the affirmation and the despair of the twentieth century.”
