ea. vol: illus. by Blanche Sims. (Oliver and Company Series). CIP. Troll. Jan. 1986. PLB $8.59; pap. $1.95. Grade 3-5 In the first book in this series, Oliver's Lucky Day, Oliver Moffitt establishes a pet-care business. In each of the books, he and his friends have an adventure while caring for one or more animals. The line drawings are humorous and add to the fun of the stories. By the end of the fourth book, the class bully's recurring attempt to get Oliver's prize possession, a stuffed owl, becomes a bit tiresome, but at least Rusty's technique varies from book to book. McBrier attempts to provide accurate pet-care information in the stories. For instance, a veterinarian tells Oliver that it is against their state law to keep a wild bird, but he tells him what to feed the wounded duck while its wing heals in Oliver and the Lucky Duck. Adventure of the Haunted House is the best of the series, since the mystery of the missing cat adds an interesting element to the pet-sitting story. Mavis D.
