Grade 3-6 The late Andy Warhol said that everyone is destined for 15 minutes of fame, and Jeremy Bluett, the title hero's real name, is determined to get his share. But every time he tries to get himself on TV, something goes wrong. Finally he organizes a bubble gum blowing contest at his house, with profits to go to his school's empty field trip fund. Unfortunately not only does he neglect to warn his parents, who are planning to paint the living room, but he also spends the entry fees on gum for his own practice. Then when the TV cameras are finally on him, he ignominiously throws up. All is well in the end for smiling readers, as Jeremy plans bigger and better events to pay back his obligations. Jeremy rings true, from his up-and-down friendships to his feelings about having to stay with a sitter after school to his relationship with his family. Elusive fame is a popular theme lately. Tom Birdseye's I'm Going To Be Famous (Holiday, 1986), also about a fifth grader, has more depth and laughter for readers, while Eth Clifford's I Never Wanted To Be Famous (Houghton, 1985) shows the humorous side of having fame thrust upon you.
