When a little girl invites her imaginary friend, Milly, for lunch and forgets to make dessert, Milly takes her to a distant shore to obtain the ingredients for dessert from the animals that live there. By the author and illustrator of Vegetable Soup.

PreSchool-Grade 2?As the story opens, a very young hostess and her grown-up guest, Milly, have just finished lunch. "'Oh, no!'" says the girl. "'I forgot to make dessert.'" But Milly has a solution, and the two begin an imaginary journey to collect the necessary ingredients from a fox, a frog, and a turtle. The child dances, sings, and acts, and the creatures reward her with strawberries, a lemon, and some mint. Her performances will easily lend themselves to young listeners' creative dramatics. This slim picture book has an appropriately dreamy quality, reinforced by impressionistic, full-color pastel illustrations that are notable for their consistent use of curved images. This title will pair well with Tony Ross's Stone Soup (Puffin, 1990) and Jeanne Modesitt and Robin Spowart's Vegetable Soup (Macmillan, 1988). Story-time groups and newly independent readers will find Lunch with Milly to be a quietly satisfying snack; a recipe for the dessert is included at the end.?Carolyn Noah, Central Mass. More like an hors d'oeuvre than a five-course meal, this slight story will leave most readers hankering for a little substance. A girl describes serving lunch to her grown-up friend, Milly, only to realize mid-meal that she has prepared no dessert. "No matter," says Milly, and off they fly through the window to a beach where the narrator must "sing a song of cats and ships. For the Fox." (Huh?) But sing she does, and a grateful fox appears with strawberries. Lemons and mint are acquired through equally peculiar performances, and the friends fly home to make Strawberries with Lemon and Mint (recipe included). Spowart's talent for surreal pastels validates the fanciful tone, but camouflages neither the undeveloped characters nor the lackluster plot. Ages 3-7.
