In a flash, Alex--who has never previously heard of Rox Rox--goes into overdrive about her coming stardom. When she actually gets the job, her extreme enthusiasm begins to lose her friends and get her in trouble at school for inattention. When she discovers that she has been replaced with Rox's little sister (except for a shot of her hands playing the piano), her disillusionment is total. Alex has much energy, if not common sense, and Krull has a good ear for dialogue--some compensation for routine characters, language, and plot. Grade 2-3-- This sequel to Alex Fitzgerald's Cure for Nightmares (Little, 1990) continues the adventures of Alex, a newcomer to Ocean View's fourth grade. After she successfully completes a piano solo for the annual Christmas show, Alex receives a special invitation to audition for a famous rock star's music video. As her dreams of being a celebrity inflate, all thoughts for her father's Christmas presents and her friends' feelings disappear. The action moves briskly throughout ten short chapters that are interspersed with black-and-white illustrations. Alex's character remains likable, but disappointingly one-dimensional.
