K-Gr 2--These authors have devised a delightfully original way to introduce children to the concept of size. Each two-page spread shows two animals and compares the size of some part common to both of them. It then goes a step further by cleverly comparing each of the parts to some everyday object. Thus, the chameleon's tongue is described as being "longer than a fire hydrant," while the raccoon's tongue is "as short as a stick of gum." This approach not only clarifies the difference between the sizes; it also makes it much more likely that the concept will be understood and remembered. The boldly colored cut-paper artwork spreads out over both pages and the animals are appealing and realistic. The lively text looks handwritten and it is arranged so that it follows the lines of the art across each page, with neither lost in the gutter. It is surprisingly easy to read and adds much to the book's overall visual appeal. Not only is this a wonderful way to teach children about size, but it also serves as a great introduction to many members of the animal kingdom. This is one concept book that will stand up to the certain demand for repeated readings without losing its freshness.
