Grade 4-7 This pared-down version of Merlin's life as told by Malory reads well and simply, and will appeal to reluctant readers. In her retelling, Lawrence includes background, beginning with Vortigern; the births of Merlin and Arthur; Merlin's enchantment by Nimue (who here repents but cannot undo her spell); and concludes with the prophecy of the return of Arthur and Merlin in the time of Britain's greatest need. Nine of the 32 pages are full-page illustrations of battles, dragons, magical wonders; the cover depicts a glowering, youthful Merlin, his garb full of Egyptian symbols and pentagrams, against a backlit representation of Stonehenge. The high-impact graphics with rough dry-brush highlights almost guarantee a readership. Ruth M. McConnell, San Antonio Public Lib .
