Grade 7 Up-- Reminiscent of "The Living Past" series (Arco), these oversized Italian imports are lavishly illustrated with colorful, well-captioned and labeled photographs, maps, paintings, sketches, and drawings--many of which were created expressly for these works, but that also include period mosaics, manuscripts, and sculptures. The books focus on about 1,000 years of European history and culture from the fall of Rome to a.d. 1300; the Middle East and Central Asia are also discussed, primarily in reference to the spread of Islam and the Turk and Mongol conquests. Solid research characterizes the well-written, interest-holding translations that should, in conjunction with the many illustrations, encourage readers to browse and to do further research. --David A.
