PreSchool-Grade 1-- Auster's offering is a ho-hum of a book that follows the fortunately/unfortunately pattern. A boy relates four episodes, each about a member of his family, in which "I like it when . . . except when . . ." Because the dialogue is forced to fit this rhythm, it's unnatural and unchildlike. The static illustrations feature crudely drawn characters in unimaginative, dull settings. There's not a spark of creativity or humor here. Equally as predictable is Amazing Aunt Agatha, who "collects clocks," "draws dinosaurs," and on through the alphabet until she "zips zebras." The book features a loving black aunt and nephew, but the situations are trite, and the illustrations are bland. There are no interesting details or outrageous extensions of the text to give the tired concept the lift it needs, making Aunt Agatha far from amazing.
