Gr 7 Up--These Italian imports are dull and confusing. The writing is complex, and both books suffer from internal inconsistencies. Africa is awkwardly arranged, while India begins abruptly in the eighth century with no overview of events before that time. Although there are many visuals, the pictures add little to the texts, and many of the maps are complicated and unhelpful. Constance Jones's Africa 1500-1900 (Facts on File, 1993), while not flawless, is thorough, more interesting, and easier to read. It includes a useful review of pre-1500s history. Patricia and Fredrick McKissack's The Royal Kingdoms of Ghana, Mali & Songhay (Holt, 1995) is a well-done, intriguing study of western Africa and contains an extensive time line.
