Gr 3-6--Choosing a career that had been virtually closed to women for more than 100 years, Julie Krone was determined to become a jockey. In her senior year of high school, she moved to Florida to live with her grandmother in a warm climate where she could practice all year round. That move proved to be pivotal, because Krone soon won her first race at Tampa Bay Downs. Over the years, she has participated in over 16,000 races, winning nearly 3000 of them. In this revealing biography, Gutman conveys the obstacles faced by Krone as a female jockey and describes the 1993 racing accident that left her seriously wounded. This absorbing book is accompanied by numerous full-color action photographs. The author brings his subject to life in a balanced portrayal of success over adversity.
