Grade 4–6—While Atlantis covers one topic, Ancients introduces four—Easter Island statues, the ruins of Tiahuanaco in the Andes, Egypt's Great Pyramids, and Eldorado, legendary city of South America. Packed with information, each skinny book is busy with large type; colorful, well-captioned illustrations and photographs; and "How Strange..." side boxes. While not always "strange," they are interesting. The writing is clear enough, but the proper nouns, especially in Ancients, will be hard to pronounce: "Roggeveen," "Khufu," "Drbal," and so on. Pronunciation guides would have been helpful. Bold words are defined along the bottom of every page. This is the weakest part of the texts. While "Poseidon," "solar year," and "gilded" are handily defined, there is no reason to define such terms as "mayor" or "dinosaur" to this audience. These words are then duplicated in glossaries. Despite these few small concerns, these are worthy titles. Fascinating fare for research and browsing.—Anne Chapman Callaghan, Racine Public Library, WI
