Grade 1-4?Through diary entries, Emma relates three separate days during her summer on the prairie. The featured events include the excitement of acquiring a young buffalo in June, hiding in the cellar during a July storm, and finding the buffalo after her escape in August. Emma's fear of the water and resistance to learning how to swim connect all of the events. The double-page layout includes half a page of text in a font resembling handwriting and a full-color oil painting of an appropriate scene. Wide borders and pale background lines make the spreads look like journal pages. A faint illustration of a diary key on a ribbon and tufts of grass in the lower corners add to the visual attraction. The open format and readable text will appeal to newly independent readers. The events, emotional tension, and fine illustrations make this book a solid selection.?Gale W.
