Here are four books intended to help the amateur photographer. Grundberg's guide is a pragmatic introduction to photography for the novice that avoids a heavy technical bent. The incorporation of techniques for both automatic and manual 35mm single-lens reflex cameras is very useful. A handy chapter on currently available brand-name models has been included for camera buyers. (Illustrations not seen.) Though Chamberlain's aim is to explore the process of producing "artistic" black-and-white photographic images, only 65 of 192 pages are devoted to discussing equipment, exposure, studio lighting, darkroom processing, special effects, copying, and so on. This is hardly sufficient for mastery of the techniques needed to produce the images taken by Chamberlain, which take up the remaining pages of the book. In addition, the photographs are not strong--some of the manipulated ones border on cliche. A much better choice at a comparable price is Henry Horenstein's Beyond Basic Photography (1977). The remaining books under review center on two very popular areas of photography: low-light and color image-making. Gibbons and Wilson's clearly explained solutions to problem lighting situations from rock concerts to sunsets make their text suitable for both amateurs and more experienced photographers. Marvullo's Color Vision is a stunner. Simply thumbing through this knockout of a book awakens one to the creative possibilities inherent in color photography. Marvullo, an instructor at the Nikon School of Photography, offers technical information next to each print, sometimes noting the lens or film used or the reasons why he chose to make a particular image. The emphasis here is on the expressive power of color, with the highly saturated images making obvious reference to the commercial tradition. The Kodak series on color photography (Kodak/Time-Life, 1985) contains far more technical detail but cannot match the impact of these images. Chamberlain is not an essential purchase. The other three titles are most highly recommended, with Grundberg as well as Gibbons and Wilson being, for their price and wide appeal, most desirable for all public libraries.
