Synopsis

In this work, Canadian and American scholars, critics, government officials, and arts presenters discuss varied aspects of the role of government in the arts. The first section addresses general questions of government involvement in the arts in Canada and the U.S., and also presents a comparison of North American arts policy with governmental policy toward the arts in Western Europe. The second section examines government policies toward arts education and cultural exchange in Canada and the U.S. The final section examines the tensions that arise concerning free expression and censorship when the governments of Canada and the U.S. allocate funds to support particular artists, programs, or projects.

About the Author

Michael Margolis is a technologist in the field of real time computing with expertise in developing and delivering hardware and software for interacting with the environment. He has more than 30 years of experience at senior levels with Sony, Microsoft, and Lucent/Bell Labs. He has written libraries and core software that are part of the official Arduino 1.0 distribution.

MILTON C. CUMMINGS, JR. (Ph.D. Harvard University) is an award-winning educator who received his undergraduate degree from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. After two years of graduate study in England, where he was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, he earned a Ph.D. in political science at Harvard University. Professor Cummings worked for six years at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., where he did research and writing on American government and politics. He then joined the political science faculty at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, where he is currently professor emeritus. At Johns Hopkins he has been honored with numerous awards. These include the George Owen Teaching Award, the Edward H. Griffin Award, and several other citations for outstanding teaching. He has also received fellowships and grants for research from the Social Science Research Council, the National Science Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and the Guggenheim Foundation.

Solomon is a professor in the graduate writing program at City College and at Sarah Lawrence College. After graduating Dalton High School, she went to Paris to study at the Sorbonne.

Betty Hanley is Chair of Arts in Education at the University of Victoria. She serves in a department that places a priority on the delivery of pre-service teacher education and graduate studies informed by artistic endeavors and research.
