At last year's International Women's Conference in Beijing and other women's conferences, Smith and her coauthors, who are involved in administration of the Episcopal Church's Women in Mission and Ministry, were struck by the problems facing Third World women. Here they set out to illustrate these problems. Much of the content is anecdotal, such as the story of a Tibetan nun or the description of a village bakery in Africa, and much of the information comes from secondary sources and the popular press. Yet the result is a moving book that should help lay readers better understand the hardships under which many of the world's women live.
