In this astonishing first book, the flesh becomes word: tough and iridescent. Whether addressing Jesus, her grandmothers, rats, garlic, pigeons, or tulips,' Annah Solbelman's poetry vibrates between contradictions: a love and a despair of things, ghostliness and "flesh waving and massive as / one hundred loaves, " commitment to dirt and an inability to keep from talking, and talking, to God. Beginning with "an argument about / the failure of nature, " The Tulip Sacrament is a profound meditation on the questions where ontology and the heart, ontology and art, meet "in the great gashed body of light."
