JOAN MURRAY grew up in New York City, and the iconography of South Bronx buildings and Harlem River bridges is a presence in her poems, along with features of the shore and woodland communities where she has lived and worked. She was educated at Hunter College and New York University and has taught literature and writing at Lehman College of the City University of New York. She has won several awards for her poetry, including a 1989 National Endowment for the Arts Grant, a 1988 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, two New York State Council on the Arts Grants, and a Pushcart Prize. Murray is an instructor in the New York State Literary Center, a consultant for the New York Foundation for the Arts, and an arts lobbyist representing the statewide constituency of individual artists for the New York State Arts and Cultural Coalition. She is at work on a novel and a book length poem. She lives in upstate New York.
