This book's focus is the popular image of the Irish in antebellum America. Ethnicity, in Knobel's sense, is "subjective and ascribed," and ethnic groups are perceptual categories. The study is based on sophisticated content analysis of a wide range of sourcespopular literature and melodrama, newspapers, textbooks, documentswhich indicate that the stereotype of the Irish evolved over time. Most interesting is the seeming connection between this evolving stereotype and the similarly developing concept of American nationality. Language patterns of antebellum America shaped popular ethnic attitudes, and they continued to do so long after the Civil War. A pathbreaking book for scholars of the period.Thomas E.
