In her second book, Rogers draws the reader into a unique fantasy world where humans are praised for their relation to animals and a love song to a hummingbird is far more erotic than any human song. This is not casual nature poetry but a relentless study by a poet who understands that for the horned lizard, "No touch to its body, even from its own kind/Could ever be delicate or caressing." Rather than avoiding human relationships, Rogers brings in husband and children, letting them share in these wonders. These poems are at first difficult to penetrate, but their power mounts from page to page. Rogers's vision is eventually so engrossing that the final section, containing poems on more traditional subjects, disappoints. Rochelle Ratner, formerly Poetry Editor, "Soho Weekly News," New York
