Book by Morgan, Robert

Since his first major book, Red Owl ( 1972), Morgan has enriched his sparse style; but his sober tone remains, as do his subjects: nature and rural life. Included in this volume are many of the poems in his preceding book, Bronze Age (Iron Mountain Pr., 1981). At his best, he is wise and subtly suggestivethe gentle voice of reason, wonder, and civility. But often the understatement turns flat, literal, chatty but humorless. One imagines the poet, note pad in hand, staring gravely at a privy, manure pile, or dead dog (the "exquisite filth" about which he writes), and it becomes difficult to share in the solemnity. This characteristic seriousness is more effective in descriptions of a revival meeting and a cemetery clean-up. A quietly competent book, for larger collections. Leonard Kniffel, Detroit P.L.
