This volume of essays includes contributions from professors and graduate students in the field of Germanistik or German Studies. Preliminary versions of these essays were delivered at two closely coordinated symposia, sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and held in the Fall of 1988. The contributions represent the response of scholars of German - from a variety of critical perspectives - to the ongoing canon debate; the closely related issue of representing culture (Kultur) also comes under consideration in several of the essays.

The Editors: This collection of essays was edited by a group of graduate students in the German department of the University of California at Berkeley. These students also organized the conferences at which preliminary versions of these papers were delivered. The contributors represent a broad number of critical perspectives and include levels of the profession ranging from post-M.A. to full professor.
«The volume, 'Rethinking Germanistik', is a unique collection of essays. On the one hand, it continues the tradition of studies in English and German on the history of the field, and on the other hand, it addresses the status of 'Germanistik' in the United States by focusing on two of the major components in which the current redefinition of the field is being played out, namely canon and culture. Since the project was a collaborative effort, initiated, organized, and carried out by graduate students from Berkeley and Washington, it demonstrates that in theory and in practice the institution of American 'Germanistik' is moving in new and exciting directions.» (Jeffrey Peck, University of Washington)
