Cette étude interdisciplinaire sur le personnage de Carmen analyse l'évocation littéraire de Prosper Mérimée et son expression musicale par Georges Bizet. Notre intérêt se concentre sur la qualité mythique de Carmen telle que Mérimée la créa et que Bizet transposa en termes purement musicaux. Quatre adaptations - la Carmen Jones d'Oscar Hammerstein II, les Carmen de Roland Petit,de Peter Brook, et de Carlos Saura - et trois interprétations de la Carmen de Bizet - celles de Bodo Igesz, de Francesco Rosi, et de Peter Hall - sont étudiées. Les analyses de ces sept représentations du personnage de Carmen dévoilent de diverses manières sa rébellion dans toute sa gamme sociale, culturelle, et spirituelle.
