Synopsis

Code-switching, the use of two or more languages in discourse, is the norm in many bilingual and multilingual communities. This book examines Japanese/English code-switching from a syntactic and a functional perspective, using data obtained from the Niseis, second generation Japanese Canadians in the Toronto Japanese community. Previous researchers have postulated that code-switching could not occur between two languages with different word order, but this book shows that this is not the case. The functions of the Niseis' code-switching in conversion is also explored.

The Author: Miwa Nishimura is an associate professor in the Department of Language and Foreign Studies, the American University, Washington, D.C. She received her Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania. She has published many articles and book reviews in professional journals.
