This research study draws upon the concepts of civil society to investigate how nonformal adult education offered through voluntary organizations encourages or discourages the development of civil society in Hungary. This is an analysis of the trend in Hungary to the professionalization of the organizations and activities within civil society.

The Author: Carol A. Pandak completed her doctoral studies in Adult Continuing Education at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL, USA. As an adjunct faculty member, she has taught the subject of her research for the International Studies Program in the College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University, also located in Illinois. She has extensive experience working in nonprofit, voluntary organizations at both the national and international level in the areas of volunteer education and training and program management. Her most recent work-related projects include global polio eradication and access to health care for children.
