This book deals with the spread of English as an academic language in Europe and in particular its use as a language of teaching. First, it depicts the historical development of the rise of English in academia in the course of the 20th century. The Authors: Ulrich Ammon is professor of German Linguistics with a focus on Sociolinguistics at the University in Duisburg. He has published numerous articles and books with sociolinguistic themes, e.g. «Ist Deutsch noch Internationale Wissenschaftssprache?» (1998).
