Reviews

British art historian Bartram examines the impact of the Pre-Raphaelite spirit on the subject matter and approach of Victorian photography. Painters and photographers shared common passionsnature, the antique, the Holy Land, death. To overcome the technical limitations of their medium (e.g., the long exposures needed) the photographers employed darkroom techniques to enhance meaning or emotional power. Bartram has employed contemporary documents and criticism as well as his own incisive analyses to reveal the interdependence between the rival arts. The book includes 180 well-annotated illustrations, many reproduced for the first time; notes; biographies; and a useful bibliography. An admirable piece of scholarship.
