About the Author:

Hugh Sidey was born in Greenfield, Iowa, in 1927. He joined the Life magazine staff in 1955 and began covering the White House in 1957. He has been writing the column The Presidency for Time since 1966. Sidey has served as the president of the White House Historical Association since 1998.

Sidey has written his "The Presidency" column for Time magazine since 1966, and in Profiles of the Presidents he shares anecdotes about the human side of the presidents, from FDR to Clinton. Each president receives two columns, which have weathered well, and a retrospective piece. Among the many incisive columns is a touching remembrance of the dedication of the FDR monument and Sidey's personal favorite about Truman's 1948 "whistle-stop" campaign.
