Synopsis

After her mother spends all of their meager funds on finery and fripperies, Elizabeth Watson and her family find themselves dangerously close to becoming paupers, but an unexpected bequest from Lucius Atwater, who greatly admired Elizabeth's book on the Second Punic War, saves the Watsons at the last minute. At first Elizabeth has every intention of relinquishing her claim on the Atwater estate to its true heirs, but after meeting with the obnoxious Mrs. Jane Atwater, Elizabeth decides to keep the money herself. When it seems that the entire Atwater family has begun a campaign to turn society against her, Elizabeth counters with a plan of her own, but she neglects to factor in the very charming and very handsome Lord Julius Atwater. Elizabeth is a delightful, clever heroine, and her "war" against the Atwaters leads to some wonderfully amusing scenes in this humorous, sweetly romantic Regency. John Charles

Bookish Elizabeth Watson may be the respected author of a book on the Second Punic War, but she is woefully ignorant about affairs of the heart. When Elizabeth unexpectedly inherits a fortune from an admirer of her book, she sets out to conquer London society, in defiance of the outraged Atwaters, who are determined to regain the fortune. Elizabeth has her pick of the ton's fortune-hunters, among them Lord Atwater, to whom she is unwillingly attracted. This novel's social commentary is often wickedly funny. Although the plot lags slightly in the middle, the characters are nicely developed, and the ending fast-paced. Reed is the author of nine other Regency romances and lives in Michigan.
