While on the way to propose to the lovely, yet slightly declasse, Annabelle Windibank, Lord Desmond Ryder cannot resist stopping when he encounters a roadside damsel in distress. The damsel turns out to be Susan Doyle, who is running away from her domineering aunt and a proposed engagement with her dreary cousin. When he discovers Susan is trying to get to London, Desmond insists on escorting her there, where, much to his surprise, Desmond finds himself putting her up at his townhouse because Susan's other aunt is out of the country. Desmond hopes that with a suitable disguise no one will recognize Susan, and her reputation will remain unblemished, leaving Desmond free to continue his romantic pursuit of Annabelle. Strangely enough, the more time Desmond spends with Susan, the less time he finds himself thinking about Annabelle. Reed jazzes up her writing with some nice touches of dry wit, and her good-natured, kind hero is a charming change from the wicked rakes frequently found in Regency romances. John Charles
