From the Author:
Zebra didn't bring out The Blackthorn Trilogy as a trilogy. Instead, they published them as stand-alone books putting Risk Everything first, Always Mine second, and Midnight's Bride third.
The beginning of the story is Always Mine and should be read first, Midnight's Bride is the second book and Risk Everything finished up the trilogy.
When read in this order, you understand the characters better and the story is complete. Some people have been a little confused with Rolf, thinking he is cruel. Remember, he had a lot of baggage to carry around. He believed Meghan's brother killed Rolf's first wife and son. When they were younger, he and Meghan had been very close. She expected he'd ask her to marry him, but he had to marry for political purposes during the Norman Conquest.
He was in a Catch-22 situation with Meghan. She was the love of his life and he coudln't marry her. He tried, in a man's way, to keep her close but Meghan's pride wouldn't allow for anything but a full commitment from him. I don't blame her. I wouldn't share Rolf either! But remember, she could have killed him when she threw the knife to land between his feet. And, he could have her killed for doing it, since it could be seen as an attempt on his life.
But she really made him suffer when she returned to her family and refused to marry him. I think she gave out as much as she took, don't you? She wasn't beaten down by any means. She was a very strong warrior woman.
From the Inside Flap:
THE CLAIMING
Meghan's heart quickened with each impatient leap Rolf took up the stairwell. When they reached the landing, his arms tightened further, as if fearing she would break free and flee.
As if she could.
He thrust open his solar door and slammed it shut with the heel of his boot. Just paces fom his bed, he halted to gaze down at her. A stiff breeze from the window opening enfolded them, and his arms tighened.
Her breath caught at the expressions flashing through his gleaming eyes. Triumph. Passion. Impatience. All were there, undisguised.
His gaze held her own as he lowered his arm beneath her knees to sraighten her in his arms. Each inch she moved against him sparked hot fire through her flesh. Hard. All of him - his massive chest, the hard slab of his belly, that hot and eager part of him - until soft lips claimed hers.
