Maclagan and Sturmfels present a textbook for first-year graduate mathematics students on tropical geometry, a new field at the interface between algebraic geometry and combinatorics with connections to many other areas of mathematics. They assume only a minimal background in undergraduate algebraic geometry but solid foundations in linear algebra and in rings and fields at the level of a first course in abstract algebra; additional background in geometry, topology, or number theory would also help.
