Reviews

Kindergarten-Grade 1-These small-format beginning readers focus on aspects of the calendar. On each page a colorful photograph depicts students of different ethnic and racial backgrounds at work along with one line of text. Day begins by describing the calendar, noting the number of days in a year, and hours in a day. Under a picture of a sunrise is the observation, "A day is everything you do from one morning to the next." The text follows young narrators as they each describe an event in their day. In Week, students are shown planning their week, followed by a comment for each day. The text in Months also explains the concept. The line "We celebrate holidays in December" is illustrated with a photo of a family celebrating Kwanzaa opposite one of people in front of a Christmas tree. Fun facts and a simple math activity (e.g., creating a bar graph based on classmates' birthdays) conclude each book. While the activities extend the topics, making a pie graph as suggested in Day may be difficult for children this age. If your library needs separate titles on these concepts, consider these clear volumes that double as easy-readers.
