Reviewed with Barbara Silberdick Feinberg's John Adams.

Gr. 5-8. Presenting the same subject for the same audience, these two series books offer well-organized, informative accounts of Adams' life, portrayed against the background of his turbulent times. Both tell his story in a straightforward manner and use quotations effectively to bring Adams' voice and point of view into the narrative. Each book contains some information that the other does not. From the Presidential Leaders series, Behrman's account is somewhat more detailed, with narrow margins that make it look crowded. Its many illustrations, mainly period paintings and prints, are relatively small, sometimes reproduced in rich color, but sometimes in black and white, even in cases where the originals, such as portraits, were actually in color. With a larger format, more spacious design, and more generous use of color, Feinberg's book, from the Encyclopedia of Presidents series, is more inviting. Though there are fewer illustrations, the pictures are larger and reproduced in color where appropriate. One nice feature of this series is a map showing the states during Adams' presidency. Both books include time lines and lists of books and Web sites. Feinberg's also has a glossary, lists of places to visit, fast facts on John and Abigail Adams, and a table of presidents. There are no source notes for the quotations. Behrman's book does provide sources. Carolyn Phelan
