Reviewed with Kevin Viola's Lou Gehrig.
Gr. 4-7. These two titles in the new sports Heroes and Legends series are good, solid biographies of two baseball greats. Lou Gehrig begins with the shy player's farewell at Yankee Stadium after being diagnosed with ALS. It then goes back to describe his early life as the son of German immigrants and how his enormous talent lifted his family from poverty. There is plenty of detail about the games he played and the records he broke, but the book also lends insight into the man himself. Mickey Mantle begins with 21-year-old Mantle, two years into his career, hitting the long-distance ball known as the Washington Wallop. Both books are engagingly written, which makes up for their dull format, with black-and-white photographs gathered in an inset. There's not much variety in the pictures in Mantle; the photos in gehrig are more interesting. Both books give sources for quotes and include stats, a short bibliography, and a list of Web sites.
