Grade 5 Up-- An excellent, highly condensed survey of the USSR. Beginning with a description of the location and terrain of the country, the text continues with a chronological overview of its history from earliest times to Gorbachev. Next, the ethnic peoples and their cultures are introduced, followed by a look at Soviet economy, including agriculture, mining, transportation, forestry, etc. In all sections, the development of the country is woven along in a general way. Each page has illustrations, some in color, which create an attractive format. In such a brief treatment, much is left out, but this is a reasonable balance of general and specific information.
