Grade 4-6-- A book with a text that is sparse and disjointed. Information is arranged in four topical sections that vary greatly in length--"The Land," "History and Government," "The People," and "Economy." The chapters provide an overview, but there are several surprising omissions. The chapter on history is the most comprehensive, and includes historical beginnings through the signing of the Free Trade Agreement; however, it mentions but does not describe the Canadian Constitution. The chapter on cultural contributions does not mention entertainers or sports figures. Other features include charts, maps, historical drawings, photographs (both black-and-white and color), and an index. Although current material on countries is always needed, this title provides minimal information. Students would be better served by the Canadian Encyclopeadia, the World Book, Brickenden's Canada (Watts, 1989), Canada (Time-Life, 1988), or the "Focus on Canadian History" series (Watts).
