These books, first published in 1988 in Spain, have both the strengths and weaknesses of a commercial book package. The strengths lie in the plentiful illustrations, richly varied and in full color. However, the exotic voluptuousness of some of the major artworks, and the obscure historical settings of some others, make it evident that they were not chosen especially for young audiences. The coverage of each of the periods of art is comprehensive and ranges from painting to architecture to sculpture and decorative arts but, again, does not appear to be written with a young readership in mind. The title The Key to . . . is somewhat misleading, as the series is not introductory, and the texts do not focus on any primary theme or technique that is defined as the focus for each period of art. The Key to Painting does offer a short course in vocabulary and a description of the various techniques used by artists since the Renaissance. Like the other books in the series, however, the printed discussion must compete for readers' attention with the eye-catching illustrations, whose lengthy captions provide a running commentary sometimes at odds with, or at least a distraction from the body of the text. These volumes will not successfully introduce children to the wonders of art. For that purpose, Piero Ventura's Great Painters (Putnam, 1984) or Bryan Holme's Enchanted World (Oxford, 1979; o.p.) are better planned. However, despite its deficiencies as an introduction to art, this package does offer a wealth of intriguing, full-color reproductions and many details about the artists and the art styles they developed to older students already acquainted with the main features of Western art. --Shirley Wilton, Ocean County College, Toms River, NJ
