Grade 4-8?Colorful photographs highlight these two books that provide an introduction to the sport. Beginning Snowboarding is an adaptation of Lurie's title. The fairly minor changes include a different cover photograph, larger typeface, and some editing that lowers the reading level a grade or two. The layout, photographs, and basic content are virtually identical. Readers learn about the equipment, basic maneuvers, types of competitions, and more advanced stunts. Practice techniques and conditioning routines are also explained. While the writing style is quite mundane, the information is solid, and the clear photographs are eye-catching. The two books are so similar that one or the other would suffice in most cases. Larry Brimner's Snowboarding (Watts, 1989; o.p.) contains much of the same material but has fewer photos. Robert Guthrie's Hotdogging and Snowboarding (Capstone, 1992; o.p.) is for a younger audience.
