Clearly written and illustrated with black-and-white photographs, the book gives a sense of Maria's forceful personality as well as the events in her life. The subject is portrayed as a spunky, fun-loving, and creative woman who endured difficult times and bravely faced adversity. Trapp's story is extended to include the musical career her family began in Europe and continued in the United States, as well as the music-camp business they created on their property in Vermont. Short chapters in a large-print format sprinkled with photographs make this an inviting and easily comprehensible biography. An author's note explains Ransom's research and her approach to writing this work.
