A history of the building of the Channel Tunnel, which connects England and France, with emphasis on the difficulties of digging a tunnel where some engineers said it could not be done.

Grade 6-9-Donovan traces the history of the Channel Tunnel from Napoleonic times to the present through accessible text, color and black-and-white photos and reproductions, and a time line of the actual construction. The diagrams and pictures are particularly helpful in explaining the construction process. Throughout the book, the author is careful to present the sides of the French and British without bias. Each chapter progresses chronologically, beginning with a brief history of the English Channel, and ending with the successes and issues that the Chunnel faces today. This is an excellent resource for science, physics, and history reports. Donovan's clear writing, her documentation of sources, a detailed index, and a solid list of sources for further study place The Channel Tunnel above par as research material. An easy-to-use resource that would complement any collection.
