Gr. 6-12. These titles in the Chronicle of America's Wars series offer concise, well-written overviews of two important twentieth-century conflicts. The Korean War begins briefly with the events that led to Korea's division before focusing in greater detail on North Korea's invasion of South Korea. The author offers good overviews of the roles of the major players, and she outlines the significant battles and campaigns, and the lengthy negotiations that resulted in armistice. Also mentioned are the roles that minorities and women played in the war. The Cold War examines armed conflicts and political battles within the 50-year power struggle between the Soviet Union, the U.S., and their respective allies. Events discussed include the Korean and Vietnam wars, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The book concludes with Mikhail Gorbachev's rise to power and the dismantling of the Soviet Union. Both books are abundantly illustrated with color and black-and-white photographs as well as maps. Appendixes include a bibliography, endnotes, a glossary, and a time line. Ed Sullivan
