From School Library Journal:
Grade 6-9-An introduction to the contributions that Steinem has made to the women's rights movement in the last 35 years. With an objective view, a flowing style, and frequent well-placed quotations from Steinem's books and articles, Lazo presents her subject's difficult childhood, early influences, educational background, writing career, and her activities as a feminist. An up-to-date, extensive bibliography attests to the author's research. Black-and-white and full-color photos appear throughout the text. This book updates Carolyn Daffron's Gloria Steinem (Chelsea, 1987), which has many of the same photos, reproduced less clearly. In general, Daffron covers more of Steinem's life experience in greater depth and writes for an older audience. Lazo's title has a lengthier bibliography with more varied sources. Both books discuss Steinem's decision to have an abortion and her brief stint as a Playboy Bunny, during which she wrote articles exposing the Playboy Clubs' unfair treatment of their female employees. A useful addition to most collections.

From Booklist:
Gr. 5^-7. Lazo does an excellent job of introducing feminist Gloria Steinem to a middle-grade audience. Although Steinem was loved by her parents, their financial problems and eventual divorce had a great impact on her. Young Gloria eventually became the primary caretaker for her mother, who was mentally ill. Readers who are in the midst of troubled childhoods will take solace from the fact that Steinem overcame so many difficulties and went on to become a respected writer, a humanitarian, and one of the leaders of the feminist revolution. Lazo details Steinem's time in India, her early years as a journalist (including an undercover stint as a Playboy bunny), and her immersion in the feminist movement. The book has a design that is clean and crisp and is packed with many interesting black-and-white and color photographs. A fine addition to biography shelves. Notes; bibliography. Ilene Cooper
