From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up-Beginning with a detailed explanation of DNA, RNA, cell structure, and amino acids and their roles in cell structure, the authors then proceed to explore the history of genetic research. The writing is rather complex, especially in the first several chapters, which deal with scientific concepts and terminology. Controversies about genetic engineering and tinkering, cloning, and gene therapy are discussed in an unbiased manner with several points of view mentioned. The book has good-quality color photographs, charts, and appealing sidebars. It gives more scientific details and explanations than Tony Allan's Understanding DNA (Heinemann Library, 2002) and is for a slightly older audience. The authors include a brief discussion of the Human Genome Project, which makes this book a fine introduction to the material covered in Kevin Alexander Boon's The Human Genome Project (Enslow, 2002). This sophisticated introduction is useful for biology and/or life-science students.
