From School Library Journal:
A book that is especially noteworthy for its calm, balanced approach to a timely topic. It avoids sensational disaster scenarios and clearly presents the basic processes of atmospheric change. Like most authorities on the subject, Johnson describes carbon dioxide gas as the main cause of global warming, and shows how deforestation reduces Earth's capacity to balance the atmosphere by absorbing the gas. She gives balanced, effective descriptions of the computer-based models that are used to make predictions, and then presents a brief, matter-of-fact outline of possible climate changes and their effects on human societies. The final chapters cover what individuals and societies can do to mitigate these effects. Johnson makes effective use of beautifully reproduced full-color photographs, which correspond well to the topics under discussion. The captions also supply important information. Kathlyn Gay's The Greenhouse Effect (Watts, 1986) is for an older audience, and she gives less basic background on the physical properties of greenhouse gases and more quotes from individual scientists with varying views of the crisis. Koral's Our Global Greenhouse ( Watts, 1989) and Pringle's Global Warming (Arcade, 1990) are excellent introductions for a slightly younger audience. Johnson's book sets a very high standard for incisive, informative converage of a topic of high current interest. --Jonathan Betz-Zall, Sno-Isle Regional Library System, Edmonds, WA
